Steve Prefontaine, 62, setting a new US record in the 5000m in a US vs USSR All Stars meet at Edwards Field, Berkeley, CA, July 3, 1971

Steve Prefontaine, 62, setting a new US record in the 5000m in a US vs USSR All Stars meet at Edwards Field, Berkeley, CA, July 3, 1971. This was Pre's first American Record since he set the national high school record in the 2-mile on April 25, 1969. Behind him is 2nd place finisher, Steve Stageberg.

Pre was a member of the AAU's USA team selected to compete in international meets the summer of 1971.

"We needed the points, and that's why I just went for the win," said 20-year old Pre. He got the win, and set an American record in the 5000m event with 13:30.4. George Young had the previous record, set the same year with a 13:32.2.

"I lost twice before to the Russians, and I'm not a loser at heart," he added.

Pre commented, "I plan to run the 5,000 in Munich next year and I hope I'm a factor in the race. I think 13:30 is a respectable time and I'm getting ready."

Pre, little known outside the US despite being the US's best at distance events, said he had his eye on world recognition. "My age has a lot to do with the non-recognition abroad," said Pre. "But if I start running 13.20 or 13:16, they better rate me."

Pre and second-place finisher Steve Stageberg of Georgetown University (also an Oregonian from South Eugene High School) both beat the meet record set by Rashid Sharafyetdinov (USSR) in 1970 in 13:41.8.

Pre led the race until the 6th lap when Stageberg took over for two laps. Pre then resumed the lead with four laps left. Pre's lap times were 64.8. 62.3, 65.9, 64.6, 66.5, 65.3, 66.6, 67.2, 67.6, 68.0, 66.0, and 60.3.

The University of Wisconsin's Pat Matzdorf garnered all the headlines, however, by setting a new world record in the high jump with 7-6 1/4, breaking a record set in 1963 by Russian Valery Brumel.

The meet was a two-day event. The Soviets had a one-point lead after the first day, but by the end of day two the US team won 126 to 110 overall, with the men winning 138-91, and the women winning 80-53. This was the 8th win in 10 meets for the US vs the Russian men. The USA team, led by University of California coach Dave Maggard, was the youngest-ever and promised spectacular US achievements in the Olympics in 1972.

Race times:

1. Pre (USA-AAU) 13:30.4 (betters US record by Geo. Young same year in 13:32.2, and betters meet record by Rashid Sharafyetdinov (USSR) in 1970 in 13:41.8)
2. Steve Stageberg (USA-AAU) 13:35.6
3. Vladimir Afonins (USSR) 13:49.0
4. Chris Stewart (UK) 13:52.2
5. Anatoly Verian (USSR) 13:53.2
6. Mario Perez (MEX) 14:05.0

Other Oregonians who participated in the meet were Tim Vollmer (former OSU star in the discus) who won, setting a meet record; Bouncy Moore (Oregon) who placed 3rd in the long jump; and veteran Mike Manley (OR TC) who was 3rd in the 3000m steeplechase. Arnie Robinson of San Diego, won the long jump in 25-10 3/4. Sid Sink of Bowling Green placed 2nd in the Steeplechase despite wins in the event in prior NCAA and AAU meets (he set a US record at the AAU meet in 8:29.5).

Today I was looking for a snack to bring to school for the break during my 7-9:40 PM class. I found a delicious peanut brittle bar and knew that was what my taste buds had to enjoy later. I ate half as a part of my lunch that day and later in my car I was about to eat the other half when I wondered how many calories it has. I am not one to really worry about calories because I am obsessed with food and pretty much just pig out any time I can. I seemed to have gotten my dad's metabolism which is great because if I didn't I'd probably weight about 30 more pounds than I do. Just out of curiosity, I opened the flap to see the completely ridiculous amount of calories and fat. Three hundred forty calories and 19 grams of fat were in this tiny bar of peanuts! I couldn't believe it! I knew it would have a lot considering the peanuts and syrup all around it but, 340? That's insane. That's like a whole meal right there. I took one more bite and left the rest to sit in my bag til I got home. Someone else can enjoy these extra pounds.

Strawberry and Cream - Portrait of a Strawberry Seller in Panchagani

Strawberry and Cream - Portrait of a Strawberry Seller in Panchagani

Strawberry is an expensive fruit in India. It makes its appearance ever so briefly to flatter and kindle the taste buds of the congnoscenti for a month or so and then it just disappears for the rest of the year.

India's climatic conditions do not really suit strawberry cultivation and it is not an original fruit out of India. The Chinese must be credited for the strawberry and also for making it a cultivar in India.
Most of the strawberries now a days come out of the area alongside Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra.
Located at an altitude of approximately 4000 feet in the western ghats of India, the climate in the winter months is ideal for growing strawberries.

The strawberry cultivation in India has its history in the international flow of commerce and mass migration enforced under the aegis of the East India Company where slaves kept as convicts were made to move to other places to build roads and work as slave labor. An open prison was set up in 1840s for the enslaved Chinese and Malay convicts who were moved from Pune to Mahabaleshwar. They worked in road making gangs and in their spare time started cultivation.

Since Mahabaleshwar had only one route in and out the Chinese prisoners were allowed to roam free and they then took up the work of cultivating their native strawberry growing technique in Mahalbaleshwar. Another activity that they started was the making of leather footwear.

Today Mahabaleshwar is known for precisely these two things - footwear and strawberries and it is a totally Chinese contribution. Most of the Chinese prisoners settled down for good and inter married and now no one can say that the Chinese were here !

It is true that you do not find any ethnic Chinese with mongoloid features, an epicanthic fold and a bamboo basket in Mahableshwar but look closer. You will find the mongoloid features ever so often on many a native family. The local people as well as an internet search will draw a blank. That is the power of subsuming in India. Here everything disappears in the grit and the heat and the dust to become Indian.

This was shot in Panchagani in the market in late evening with light coming from the western side. A quick in and out before the man started posing in earnest. And this was in October 2010 when the fruit is not in season.

Strawberry Shortcake Cake

For my niece's 1st birthday. I couldn't find any Strawberry Shortcake stuff in the stores anymore! I ordered a candle for the top, but it didn't come in time. Ahhh well, no big deal. It is decorated in buttercream with fondant and gumpaste accents. It even made a 2.5 hour trip in the car with only one flower falling off.

25 Tribute Everbearing Strawberry Plants - BEST BERRY!

The best tasting of the everbearing strawberries (and a great-tasting berry, period), 'Tribute' produces a large crop of medium-size, firm, deep red fruit over a long period. Its superb flavor makes it an excellent fresh-eating and dessert berry, and its firm texture ensures that it also freezes well. 'Tribute' is a much better tasting and producing berry than 'Ozark Beauty'. It is excellent for the garden, strawberry jar or patio pot. From a spring planting you'll get a late crop the first year and a full-season crop there after. Plants are resistant to red stele and verticillium wilt.

how many calories is too much - The Man

The Man Who Knew Too Much [VHS]

The Man Who Knew Too Much [VHS]

Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. Along with Hitchcock's other films from the mid-1950s to 1960 (including Vertigo, Rear Window, and Psycho), The Man Who Knew Too Much is the work of a master in his prime. --Tom Keogh

1/365: Here Goes Nothing

1/365: Here Goes Nothing

April 9, 2009: I've tried the 365 before and I gave up. I never really edited my images so I thought that I'd try it out here.

I have ps cs4 on my computer but I have NO CLUE how to use it. I managed to add a texture (just one of the blah ones that came with it... sandstone?) and I changed the coloring. I tried a vignette but I couldn't get the layers to merge or it erased my other layers. At this point I am frustrated and ready to drop the laptop off the balcony.

I always thought selfies were interesting to see... but I think mine has failed. Epically. But seeing as this is my first picture out of 365 I don't think I should be too harsh and critical of myself. Then again... I'm human... we all judge ourselves too much.

RANDOM FACT: I am a serious coffee junkie and I was over joyed when a starbucks was opened only five minutes from me... I only wish the chai I like didn't have so many calories!!

Quantify yourself

Quantify yourself

I have recently (read since a year or 2) developed an interest for collecting data about our daily lives. How much coffee do you have, how many hours do you sleep, how many calories do you absorb, how long are you productive, how much time do you spend on a particular task, etc. You get the point. There is an impressive amount of literature on the topic. This idea of quantifying yourself has also been recently supported by the development of numerous tracking devices (Fitbit, etc.) and web services (daytum.com, rescuetime.com, etc.) I'm not so sure yet where I'm going with this, and to be honest, it sounds a bit creepy too. I'll keep thinking and reading about it a bit more....
